北京大学（北京）、復旦大学（上海）、国立台湾大学（台北）と共同で運営
している「東アジア研究フェローシッププログラム」のフェローによるものです。

◆講　師：　David Kearn (Associate Professor, St. John's University, USA)
◆テーマ：　"Understanding Pathways to Conflict in the Western Pacific"
◆Abstract: This presentation examines potential mechanisms or pathways
to military conflict between the United States and Peoples Republic of
China based on prevailing approaches from International Relations (IR)
Theory.
The security dilemma in the Western Pacific seems to be intensifying,
introducing crisis and arms race instabilities and escalation dynamics
in the event of a crisis. Many of the domestic political factors that
predict more cooperative outcomes in interstate relations are weak or
absent in the U.S.-China relationship. Therefore, there are few internal
restraints on policies that could precipitate conflict. Conversely,
these internal forces could make risky behavior more likely.
